ARRIVALS Kingston SoundWalk

Presented by Deep Listening Institute, Arrivals Kingston is a self-guided, listening walk along the West Strand of the Rondout Creek in Kingston.  Starting at Gallo Park, the walk is accompanied by a free iPhone app, which uses the device’s GPS to activate different soundworks, as the listener walks along the waterfront. The app contains 10 sound pieces, each tied to a specific location. These contain stories by local residents about their experiences of arriving in Kingston, interwoven with improvised vocalizations. The app is available in the App Store under "Arrivals Kingston" throughout the rest of the year and can be enjoyed from any location.

This original audio work compiled and created by sound artist Viv Corringham uses a GPS system to sense where a listener is. As a listener walks, they will hear different pieces with several different speakers and each has a theme.  Themes include: personal histories, outsiders, home, connection and the city of Kingston itself.  The sound pieces can be heard in different combinations in different locations.   The stories are an eclectic mix of voices woven with Corringham’s unique vocalizations blending story and text to create a poignant, haunting and heart-felt portrait of Kingston.

Corringham states, “Most of my work explores people’s “sense of place”, especially very familiar places.”  She adds, “Arrivals touches on the human desire to move or to disappear. Its elements are space and place, memory and presence.”

Local participants include many residents young and old as well as area business owners, community leaders, local historians, artists, and children from the George Washington Montessori Elementary School.
